Soaring Over Heritage: The Muttrah Cable Car Transformation
The Muttrah Cable Car (also known as the Muttrah Teleferik) is a landmark tourism infrastructure project designed to redefine the skyline of Muscat, Oman. Developed by Sabeen Investments in collaboration with Swiss manufacturer Bartholet, this ambitious initiative aims to offer a unique aerial perspective of the historic Muttrah district, blending modern technology with Omani heritage.
The system spans approximately 3 km and features three main stations that connect the waterfront to the surrounding mountains:
• Muttrah Port Station: Located near the Fish Market and Souq, serving as a primary gateway for cruise ship passengers.
• Al Raya Peak (Mountain Top Station): The largest station and a leisure hub, featuring 360-degree views, international restaurants, an open-air theatre, and even a children's roller coaster.
• Hay Al Ward Station (Flower Park): A waterfront terminus integrated with gardens, dancing fountains, and commercial spaces for local crafts.
Technically, the project is a feat of engineering, featuring 18 cabins styled by Studio F. A. Porsche. It includes the tallest support towers ever built by Bartholet (reaching up to 87 meters) and will be the longest "over-water" cable car in the Middle East. To enhance the visitor experience, a partnership with Omantel will provide high-speed connectivity and smart ticketing throughout the journey.
Beyond transportation, the project is an economic catalyst expected to attract over 4 million riders annually. It aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040 by diversifying the economy and creating opportunities for local SMEs to operate retail and dining outlets within the stations. As of early 2026, the project is in its final testing phase, with an official opening scheduled for Spring 2026. By linking the historic port, Riyam hill, and coastal gardens, the cable car creates a cohesive visitor experience that celebrates Muttrah’s natural beauty and cultural significance.
The Muttrah Cable Car acts like a high-tech thread sewing together the diverse patches of Muttrah's landscape—the bustling ancient markets, the rugged mountain peaks, and the serene coastal gardens—into a single, seamless tapestry for visitors to admire from above.
